HEAT was constructed after my visit to a Corsican cemetery, and a chance encounter with a Rima ceiling heater being removed from a London council flat. I showed it in “Fragments of Haunted Houses” at the Pomeroy Purdy Gallery in 1988. The heater came on automatically when a viewer opened the twin doors. It was also a meditation on the nature of electricity. In the mirrored top section, I installed a copper sheet with an engraved image of a gryphon, the mythic protectors of the gold of the Hyperboreans.
